Phillips de Pury & Company were auctioning a collection of contemporary art from and about India this weekend at the Saatchi gallery. Besides some dream like images of Raghu Rai and beautiful but obvious offerings from Steve McCurry what caught my eye was “River Crossing” by Atul Bhalla, a Delhi based artist.
Its a piece of art that conveys movement and stillness in the same instance, and its heavy with thought and consideration however unlike much of the photography art these days, it down plays itself, allowing the viewer to discover it in its own time. One last observation was the work of Sunil Gupta, an artist who’s work I am familiar with, and have admired from my early university days. Looking at the prints that were on offer at this auction, it seems that something has gone amiss in the translation of the artists vision as the quality of prints on offer were of a disappointing quality.
