“The People of India” was a body of work that the colonial rulers of India had instigated as a form of record keeping that would allow the British to catalog the cast, religion and other ethnographic traits of their subjects, and hence enable them to better rule and govern the various classes of the Indian sub-continent.

My aim is to over the next couple of years make journeys into India, and state by state, create portraits, offering a personal reinterpretation of this 19th Century ethnographic project.  My images will focus on regional variations and bring light to those I feel will disappear as India fights for its position as a 21st Century global power.

Over the coming weeks, I will post my journey and experience of making this project…the images will have to come later as the 4×5 negatives will be processed when I reach London!
